Unit 1
Journal 6
"Egyptian Life"

Egyptian hieroglyphs were a formal writing system used by the ancient Egyptians that combined logographic and alphabetic elements. Egyptians used cursive hieroglyphs for religious literature on papyrus and wood. Less formal variations of the script, called hieratic and demotic, are technically not hieroglyphs.

Essential Question – What was significant about the culture and geography of Ancient Egyptians? What are the differences and similarities of early writing systems?

  • On the Right Side  -
  1. Create a bulleted list labeled “Geography of Egypt” explaining how geography played such an important role in early Egyptian history.  Begin reading on page 35 at, "The Geography of Egypt."
  2. Underneath this Create a bulleted list labeled “Role of the Pharaoh"  explaining the belief in the afterlife in Ancient Egypt, as well as the divinity of the Pharaoh.  Be sure to include information about the process/reason for mummification.
  • On the Left Side –
  1. Create a “3-Column” graphic organizer labeled “Comparing early writing systems,” comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences of three form of early writing: cuneiform, hieroglyphics, and the Phoenician alphabet.
  2. Be sure to include: who invented it, when it was used, was it pictograph-based or phonetic? how this writing has been preserved (how do we know about it?)

Only five independent writing systems have been produced in the entire human history.  Sumerian, Egyptian, Harappan, Mayan, and Chinese.  Among them only Chinese has survived into modern age.  All others have long since ceased to be functional.  From Egyptian and Sumarian, the proto-Canaanite was developed in 1750 BC and became precursor of all the alphabetic languages
